How to choose the right image format for what you're doing

Choosing the right image format is not simply about picking the newest or smallest file type. The best format depends on what the image contains, where it will be used, and what matters most—quality, transparency, compatibility, or file size.

Start with the purpose of the image

Before choosing a format, ask: What am I going to do with this image?

A photograph for a website, a logo with a transparent background, a social-media graphic, and an image that needs maximum compatibility may all call for different choices.

The purpose often tells you more than the file extension does.

JPG — a strong choice for photographs

JPG is designed around photographic images and uses lossy compression. It is often a good choice for photographs, real-world scenes, product photography, and images with many colors and subtle tones.

Its practical advantage is relatively small file sizes while retaining good visual quality when an appropriate quality setting is used.

Use JPG when you need a photograph that is widely compatible and reasonably small.

Repeatedly converting and saving a JPG can progressively reduce image quality because lossy compression is applied again.

PNG — when transparency or lossless quality matters

PNG uses lossless compression, so it preserves the image data rather than intentionally discarding it during compression.

One of its most useful features is support for transparency. PNG can therefore be useful for logos, icons, screenshots, graphics, and images where a transparent background or lossless result matters.

A PNG can, however, be considerably larger than a JPG when used for a typical photograph.

Using PNG automatically does not mean a photograph will look better. If transparency is unnecessary, PNG may create a much larger file without a meaningful visual benefit.

WebP — a practical modern option

WebP is a modern image format designed for efficient compression and supports features such as transparency.

It can be useful for websites, modern web applications, photographs, graphics, and situations where file size matters.

For websites, reducing image file size can reduce the amount of data that needs to be transferred. But format alone does not determine the final file size. Dimensions, image content, compression settings, and quality all matter.

There is no single “best” format

A useful starting point is:

  • Photographs + broad compatibility: consider JPG.
  • Transparency + lossless graphics: consider PNG.
  • Modern web delivery + efficient compression: consider WebP.

These are practical starting points, not absolute rules. A large PNG photograph may benefit from conversion to another format, while a transparent logo may become unsuitable if converted to JPG.

Don't choose a format by file size alone

A smaller file is not automatically a better file. A tiny image with visible artifacts or insufficient dimensions may be completely unsuitable for its intended use.

The goal is not the smallest possible file. The goal is the smallest practical file that still satisfies the image's intended use.

Conversion can change more than the file extension

Changing photo.png → photo.jpg does not simply rename the file. The image may be re-encoded using a different compression method, and characteristics such as transparency may be affected.

For example, converting a PNG with transparency to JPG can result in the loss of the transparent background because JPG does not provide the same transparency capability.

Before converting, consider the image content, transparency, compatibility requirements, destination, and how much file-size reduction is actually needed.

Quality and format work together

The final result depends on more than the format. For a photographic image, think about:

Format + dimensions + compression/quality settings

A high-quality JPG at unnecessarily large dimensions may still produce a large file. An aggressively compressed WebP may be extremely small but visibly degraded.

Choosing a format should therefore not be separated from the other properties of the image.

  • Website photograph: consider WebP or JPG, depending on your compatibility and workflow requirements.
  • Logo requiring transparency: consider PNG or WebP with transparency.
